Hey Pam
I wanted to check with you about this response from LA. Unified (forwarded email below) before I talk
to Mr. Stiles about names in the yearbook. The district is saying that there is no permission slip
needed for the transgender kid to have their preferred name in the yearbook since it is not a legal
document.
Is this satisfactory for us to allow the kids to have their preferred names in the yearbook?

Hello Joe,
Thank you for your email. The required use of the legal name is applicable to official documents only. The
year book is not an official document. You cannot have different standards for parent permission for
transgender as for any other student. Therefore, there is no need to secure approval from the parents.
It is important to remember that the yearbooks are primarily for the students themselves. We cannot limit
students right to free speech.
By the way, Janice Escobar sends her best. She is my colleague in the unit this year.
All the best.

Subject: Transgender Students issue
Hi Hiram
I am a PSW at Palisades Charter. I have a group of transgender students that I have been working with
for over a year. Last year when the yearbooks came out they were quite upset about their birth names
being listed in the yearbook, rather than their actual names. It was something we hadn't thought
about as we discussed ways to self-advocate. This year we met with the yearbook teacher and he was
concerned that he would get into hassles with parents if he used their actual names rather than their
birth names. He said that he would like to get some sort of "permission slip" from parents to use the
chosen or actual name rather than the birth name. I am wondering if LAUSD has some sort of letter or
permission slip that they use to get permission to use the preferred name. I'd rather use something
that has already been used rather than re-invent the wheel.
Thanks for your help!
Joe

Good morning!
The E-mail threads were getting confusing, so I am starting a new one. I spoke with Greg and he explained
that 1.18 (lines A-3 and A-4) are correct as that is our ESY and that 6.23 (line A-5) is the NPS ADA. These were
the 3 lines Chhoung said were incorrect when we spoke.
I have a question about the supporting documents for AS, do I need to complete the supporting document
for each student or can I do it by NPS?

Good Afternoon Dorothianne,
As long as Pali has a place to store them that is fine with me. We can coordinate installation as soon as
the issues found during our drinking water testing program survey are resolved. I should have that
notice of M&O Repairs to you by the end of the month, and we can come up with an action plan to
address those and determine whether the District wants to sample with the old fixtures or the new
ones.

Pending Work Stoppage
Dear Colleague,
As schools have reached out on the pending work stoppage, we wanted to provide a general
update on the COP team and our events:
• COP Staff - COP staff will be deployed to district sites to support schools and may not
be easily accessible during the period of the work stoppage. COP staff will have an
out-of“Offlce response on the days of the work stoppage.
• Mental Health Symposium - Thursday's symposium is still scheduled to take place.
We will reach out if there are changes.
• COP Events - Upcoming Option 3 events are still scheduled (i.e. interviews, Fiscal
Council, etc.). We will reach out if there are changes.
While we are hopeful a solution will be reached soon, we will provide periodic updates if the
work stoppage takes place.
Thank you in advance for you patience and understanding.
In your service.

Students
Improving school attendance requires a collaborative effort A systems
approach includes advocates who utilize a three-tiered model (prevention,
early intervention, and intensive intervention) to improve individual and
school-wide student attendance. Prevention Incorporates universal
strategies such as each school sending a clear and consistent attendance
message. Early intervention includes schools making phone calls to a
targeted student group (I.e. students with basic attendance). Intensive
intervention requires targeted group intervention, such as connecting
chronically absent students to resources that address attendance barriers.
By utilizing a tiered model and placing students into attendance bands,
stakeholders can draw on best practices for each target group.

Dear Ms. Magee,
I will be attending Pali as a freshman in August of 2019, as I am currently an eighth grade student at Paul Revere. I am
an active member of the California Junior Scholarship Federation at school, and I am planning on joining the
California Scholarship Federation in high school in addition to joining the National Honor Society. I was wondering if
Pali currently has a National Honor Society chapter or if I could start one. Please reach out at your convenience.
Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Cleo Waxman-Lee

My dearest Palisades Charter High School family.
Although I do still have three more days of work with LAUSD...I didn't want the time to get away from me
without letting you all know how incredible you all are to me and what an extraordinary honor it has been to
serve you in my administrative specialist assignment for CSD. The past four years working with you has been
one of the most significantly powerful experiences I've ever had in my 30 year career. You epitomize all that I
believe in as an educator and leader-commitment, dedication, honor, integrity, perseverance, creativity,
inspiration and empowerment. Your ability to address all situations that arise with grace, dignity and clarity is
truly something to be extremely proud of....your ability to look at challenge and creatively problem solve to
move forward dedicated to your mission is truly impressive. I am moved by who you are and what you do to
support the growth of the individual student into a future that inspires contribution as citizens of tomorrow.
The inspiration, vision and innovative practices that drives your purposeful mission is empowering and has
touched my life significantly.
Stay in touch! My personal email is chris.bocelli@email.com and my personal cell is 949-285-8908. When
you get to Tennessee do call...l look forward to ongoing friendship and I want to keep hearing about all you
are doing!
Take care of yourselves,
Chris
Btw, I will let you know who your new person is as soon as I find out before the end of the week.

Previous Items:
• Innovate Public Schools - A recent report found that 95% of students have aspirations of
attending college, but they will have trouble succeeding there because elementary, middle and
high schools are often providing school work that Is not on grade level. While students work hard
and get As, Bs, and Cs on their assignments, they are only meeting grade-level standards 17% of
the time. Students of color are particularly impacted by this. They are not achieving less — they
are being given less by a school system that doesn’t believe they can handle more challenging
work. Read their recent blog HERE .

Subject: Academic Decathlon Schedule
Hi Kathy,
I wanted to introduce myself and ask to be included on group correspondence related to Academic Decathlon
programming. I am the Executive Director at Palisades Charter High School. 1 know this has been a busy,
challenging time for your department and LAUSD as you try to deal with the impact of the recent fires and
anticipate the repercussion of a possible teacher strike on student events. Like you, Pali is trying to make
decisions keeping the best interest of students in mind. Please feel free to contact me if I can ever be a
resource for you.
Sincerely,

Dear Academic Decathlon Coaches and Administrators:
The situation with the possible work action interfering in the Academic Decathlon competition
this year has resulted in the need to create and implement a unique schedule.
We have been working closely with CAD and USAD via CAD to provide the competition within
the given deadlines.
We realize it is upsetting and unfortunate as the usual amount of preparation time has been
disrupted. PLEASE know we have made every attempt to maximize available days and
resources.
The following will be the schedule for the 2018-2019 Academic Decathlon competition as long
as the job action does not interfere with the dates.

Additionally, it is understandable that there may need to be 2/3 proctors for the tests.
